Living Comfortably With Crohn's Disease

Diagnosed With Crohns Disease?
Welcome To My Natural Journeys

All right, I'm going to ask you this. Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? If I told you there was a natural way to live a normal and virtually pain free life with Crohn's, would you want to know more? I did. Is there someone in your life that is suffering from this disease and the treatment that comes with it? Then read on...
Back in 1993 when I was released from the hospital for the last time from a terrible flare up, I had lost a lot of weight and hair. I had a pastor come to the hospital to give me last rights while my family was by my side. Things were looking pretty bad for me. I underwent some surgery and managed to pull through. I think my will to live was stronger than my will to die. (and I know those of you who are suffering know what I mean.) Being so sick and in such extreme pain can take its' toll on your body and your mind and the will to go on can be tough and unbearable. Sometimes it just seems easier to let go and succumb. I'm here to tell you it doesn't have to be this way and yes, there is hope!

I Was Going To Write A Book

I thought that if I wrote a book, telling my story about my battle with Crohns that I would be able to help people that suffer from the same disease. Then I thought about how long it would take to write my story and get it published. Instead I thought I would tell it here on the internet where people suffering with this awful disease could find a natural solution quickly and without having to jump through a bunch of hoops. I'm offering links for purchasing spirulina online if you prefer that to going to your local health food store or if you live in the remote areas then ordering online might be the best way.
Not only are the medicines out there for treating Crohns pricey, they are pretty much hit and miss. (Trust me, I tried a few) Meaning that if the first prescription doesn't seem to be helping then they move on to something else. The side effects are vast and can lead to hair loss, weight loss, body rashes, vomiting, fever,
diarrhea, nausea, headache, heartburn and a greater susceptibility to infections. This is because treatment for Crohn’s disease depends on the location and severity of the disease, complications, and the person’s response to previous medical treatments when treated for recurring symptoms.
I am thrilled to tell you that I have been pharmaceutical free and hospital free for 17 years now! I control my Crohns naturally and am not afraid to go out for dinner or to leave the house for fear that I will be spending my time in the nearest bathroom. I enjoy going for road trips without having to worry about stopping every ten minutes to find a bathroom. Let me tell you, back when I was being treated by the doctors for Crohns, I wouldn't dare wander too far from the comfort of my own bathroom. (that's where I spent the majority of my time)
I turned down dinner invitations to friends places because I was embarrassed about having to explain the frequent trips to the bathroom. Being in constant pain didn't make me feel very social either. I was miserable.

YIKES!
Here's a list of Drug Therapy for Crohns Disease And The Potential Side Effects

From The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse
The NDDIC is a service of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institutes of Health.

Drug Therapy Anti-Inflammation Drugs. Most people are first treated with drugs containing mesalamine, a substance that helps control inflammation. Sulfasalazine is the most commonly used of these drugs. Patients who do not benefit from it or who cannot tolerate it may be put on other mesalamine-containing drugs, generally known as 5-ASA agents, such as Asacol, Dipentum, or Pentasa. Possible side effects of mesalamine-containing drugs include nausea, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, and headache.

Cortisone or Steroids.
Cortisone drugs and steroids—called corticosteriods—provide very effective results. Prednisone is a common generic name of one of the drugs in this group of medications. In the beginning, when the disease it at its worst, prednisone is usually prescribed in a large dose. The dosage is then lowered once symptoms have been controlled. These drugs can cause serious side effects, including greater susceptibility to infection.

Immune System Suppressors.
Drugs that suppress the immune system are also used to treat Crohn’s disease. Most commonly prescribed are 6-mercaptopurine or a related drug, azathioprine. Immunosuppressive agents work by blocking the immune reaction that contributes to inflammation. These drugs may cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea and may lower a person’s resistance to infection. When patients are treated with a combination of corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drugs, the dose of corticosteroids may eventually be lowered. Some studies suggest that immunosuppressive drugs may enhance the effectiveness of corticosteroids.

Infliximab (Remicade).
This drug is the first of a group of medications that blocks the body’s inflammation response. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug for the treatment of moderate to severe Crohn’s disease that does not respond to standard therapies (mesalamine substances, corticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents) and for the treatment of open, draining fistulas. Infliximab, the first treatment approved specifically for Crohn’s disease is an anti-TNF substance. Additional research will need to be done in order to fully understand the range of treatments Remicade may offer to help people with Crohn’s disease.

Antibiotics.
Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine caused by stricture, fistulas, or prior surgery. For this common problem, the doctor may prescribe one or more of the following antibiotics: ampicillin, sulfonamide, cephalosporin, tetracycline, or metronidazole.

Anti-Diarrheal and Fluid Replacements.
Diarrhea and crampy abdominal pain are often relieved when the inflammation subsides, but additional medication may also be necessary. Several antidiarrheal agents could be used, including diphenoxylate, loperamide, and codeine. Patients who are dehydrated because of diarrhea will be treated with fluids and electrolytes.

Nutrition Supplementation. The doctor may recommend nutritional supplements, especially for children whose growth has been slowed. Special high-calorie liquid formulas are sometimes used for this purpose. A small number of patients may need to be fed intravenously for a brief time through a small tube inserted into the vein of the arm. This procedure can help patients who need extra nutrition temporarily, those whose intestines need to rest, or those whose intestines cannot absorb enough nutrition from food. There are no known foods that cause Crohn’s disease. However, when people are suffering a flare in disease, foods such as bulky grains, hot spices, alcohol, and milk products may increase diarrhea and cramping.

Surgery Two-thirds to three-quarters of patients with Crohn’s disease will require surgery at some point in their lives. Surgery becomes necessary when medications can no longer control symptoms. Surgery is used either to relieve symptoms that do not respond to medical therapy or to correct complications such as blockage, perforation, abscess, or bleeding in the intestine. Surgery to remove part of the intestine can help people with Crohn’s disease, but it is not a cure. Surgery does not eliminate the disease, and it is not uncommon for people with Crohn’s Disease to have more than one operation, as inflammation tends to return to the area next to where the diseased intestine was removed.

Some people who have Crohn’s disease in the large intestine need to have their entire colon removed in an operation called a colectomy. A small opening is made in the front of the abdominal wall, and the tip of the ileum, which is located at the end of the small intestine, is brought to the skin’s surface. This opening, called a stoma, is where waste exits the body. The stoma is about the size of a quarter and is usually located in the right lower part of the abdomen near the beltline. A pouch is worn over the opening to collect waste, and the patient empties the pouch as needed. The majority of colectomy patients go on to live normal, active lives.

Sometimes only the diseased section of intestine is removed and no stoma is needed. In this operation, the intestine is cut above and below the diseased area and reconnected.

Because Crohn’s disease often recurs after surgery, people considering it should carefully weigh its benefits and risks compared with other treatments. Surgery may not be appropriate for everyone. People faced with this decision should get as much information as possible from doctors, nurses who work with colon surgery patients (enterostomal therapists), and other patients. Patient advocacy organizations can suggest support groups and other information resources.
People with Crohn’s disease may feel well and be free of symptoms for substantial spans of time when their disease is not active. Despite the need to take medication for long periods of time and occasional hospitalizations, most people with Crohn’s disease are able to hold jobs, raise families, and function successfully at home and in society.

This tiny aquatic plant offers 60% all-vegetable protein, essential vitamins and phytonutrients such as the antioxidant beta carotene, the rare essential fatty acid GLA, sulfolipids, glycolipids and polysaccharides.

Published studies from all over the world feeding mice, hamsters, chickens, turkeys, cats, fish and even humans, confirm spirulina improves immune system function. Medical scientists discovered it not only stimulates the immune system, it actually enhances the body's ability to generate new blood cells. Important parts of the immune system, bone marrow stem cells, macrophages, T-cells and natural killer cells, spleen and thymus glands - all show enhanced activity. Scientists observe it causes macrophages to increase in number, become activated and more effective killing germs.
How can you not be excited about this stuff?
It has literally helped me live life again! I don't have to decline invitations to friends houses. I can go out anytime I want for a meal and not have to worry about foods on the menu that are going to hurt when digesting. I don't have to worry about excusing myself and running to the bathroom. This is nothing new to me either. I have been on Spirulina for 17 years now and have never looked back! My Crohns is in check!

The Health Benefits Of Chlorella And Spirulina

Spirulina is an ideal anti-aging food; concentrated nutrient value, easily digested and loaded with antioxidants. Beta carotene is good for healthy eyes and vision. This all vegetable, low fat protein means we can lighten up on a meat centered diet that can aggravate arthritis, irritable bowls and raise cholesterol. When our bodies have a hard time digesting meat, vegetables like spirulina are good sources of more iron and essential minerals.
Spirulina is the most extensively researched food microalgae, well documented in numerous books, journal articles, and periodicals. Many people use Spirulina in their own self-care strategy for more energy, nutritional insurance, weight control and cleansing. Perfect in between or before meals for good nutrition. Easily digested without the heaviness of bulky food. This helped my body take in nutrition without the pain of having to digest foods. It's ideal and safe for children, pregnant and nursing mothers. Spirulina contain an astounding array of nutritional elements: vitamins, macro-minerals, trace minerals, essential fatty acids, protein, nucleic acids (RNA and DNA), chlorophyll, and a vast spectrum of phytochemicals. They are said to contain every nutrient required by the human body. You could literally live off these micro-algae. You wouldn't need to eat much, either, since they are so nutritionally dense.
Spirulina and chlorella offer considerable help in the area of intestinal health. What they do is support healthy intestinal flora-- the "friendly" bacteria in your digestive tract that protect you from disease and aid in digestion.

Chlorella and spirulina have been shown to be effective in treating and even reversing the following conditions:
  • All types of Cancer, Obesity, Diabetes, Arthritis, Depression, Hypoglycemia, Liver disorders and severe liver damage,
  • Intestinal ulcers, Asthma, Hemorroids, High Blood Pressure, Constipation, Inflammation of joints and tissues, Infections, Bleeding gums, Mineral deficiencies, Essential Fatty Acids deficiencies, Mineral Deficiencies, Body Odor, Bad Breath and the list goes on.
  • Both Chlorella and Spirulina are particularly useful for:

    • People with poor digestion and assimilation (these micro-algae are easy to digest and absorb)
    • People with poor vitality and anemia
    • Individuals who consume large quantities of animal protein (the micro-algae protein, in contrast, is easier to digest and offers a far healthier balance of minerals)
    • People who eat refined or processed foods
    • People who take prescription drugs (spirulina protects the kidneys and liver)
    • People who are overweight or obese
    • People who engage in physical exercise and / or strength training
    • People with low energy levels (feeling depleted, exhausted, etc.)

How I Take Spirulina To Fight Crohns Disease

    Spirulina:
Dosage for fighting my disease: 25 to 30 grams (roughly twenty, 500mg pills twice daily.) (When I'm stablizing my Crohns.)
Dosage for maintaining my disease: 15 to 20 grams per day. (roughly ten, 500mg pills twice daily.)
Once you get the okay from your doctor you can begin to incorporate the Spirulina into your routine. If your doctor is unfamiliar with Spirulina, encourage them to do the research. There's a lot out there and some links on this page as well.
Always drinks lots of juice or water throughout the day. It helps with absorption in the intestines.
Don't get me wrong, Crohns will always be with you but you don't have to suffer through it. Spirulina helps to balance out my body's nutritional needs that it cant get through the absorption of daily foods. Like all people, there are some foods that our body simply cant handle and we end up gassy and bloated. That being said, I am able to eat and digest fresh fruit, salads, most nuts, legumes, cheese, butter, jam and some whole grains. Before taking Spirulina my diet consisted of baby food and Boost (the nutritional drink). Spirulina keeps my Crohns in check. My skin is healthy and so is my hair. There is so much positive research out there on Spirulina. Check it out. Research it yourself. You'll see what I mean. Ask your local health food store if they carry it. Most do and it is relatively easy to find and inexpensive to buy. If they don't have it ask them to order it in. The biggest bottles are the best because you will be taking lots for the first month or so depending on how severe your Crohns is. Your first couple weeks of taking it will be a detox time. The spirulina will be busy replacing the bad flora in your intestines with good. If you're feeling a bit constipated, simply drink more water and you'll feel better. You will notice almost right away, a new found energy. You'll start to feel reborn in a way. It's hard to explain but it's amazing! It saved my life! I will be taking spirulina for the rest of my life but the results are worth it. There are no negative side affects from spirulina. You could literally eat the whole bottle and the most you'd feel is energetic and full. It is truly the world's greatest super-food!
